Postwar streets, modern systems
Nepean was a farming township for most of its history. Its suburbs began spreading onto farmland in the 1950s and 60s, it became a city in 1978, and it joined Ottawa in 2001. Many homes from the early decades have had several furnaces by now, but the house still carries the setup it started with.
What an older house brings to a replacement
- A chimney. The original furnace and water heater usually vented up it. A new high-efficiency furnace vents out a side wall instead, and a gas water heater left alone on the chimney may need a liner.
- Ducts sized for heat. Central air often came later. Upstairs rooms that won't cool may need more return air, or a ductless heat pump that skips the ducts.
- Old thermostat wire. Often too few wires for a smart thermostat. An easy fix once it's spotted.
The technician checks all three before quoting a new furnace or air conditioner, so the price you hear is the price of the whole job.
