Check three things before you call
- The thermostat. Set it to Heat and a few degrees above the room temperature. If it runs on batteries and the screen is blank or faint, replace them.
- The furnace switch and breaker. The switch looks like a light switch and is usually on the wall near the furnace or at the top of the basement stairs. Make sure it's on and the furnace breaker hasn't tripped.
- The vents outside. A high-efficiency furnace breathes through two plastic pipes out the side of the house. Snow, ice or a nest over either one shuts it down. Enbridge Gas asks customers to brush snow off vents gently and never pile snow against them.
Still no heat? Call (613) 801-3078. Try not to keep resetting the furnace. One that keeps locking itself out is telling you something, and the technician needs to see it.
Why a furnace runs for a minute and quits
A modern furnace goes through the same steps every time it starts. The inducer fan clears the burners, the pressure switch confirms the vent is open, the igniter glows, the gas valve opens and the flame sensor confirms there's a flame. If any step fails, the control board shuts down and tries again. After a few failed tries it locks out.
Most boards flash a fault code through a small window in the furnace door. The technician starts there, then tests the part that step depends on, rather than swapping parts until the heat comes back.
Repair or replace?
If the furnace is in reasonable shape and the part is available, repair is the answer. When a furnace is old, needs a major part, or has needed repairs every winter, the technician will say so plainly and you decide. The one problem we won't leave running is a cracked heat exchanger, because it can let carbon monoxide into the house. If yours is due for replacement, see new furnaces.
Smell gas or hear a carbon monoxide alarm?
Don't wait for us. If you smell gas, leave the house and once you're outside call Enbridge Gas at 1-866-763-5427 or 911. If a carbon monoxide alarm goes off, get everyone out and call 911 from outside. Call us afterwards to find the cause.
